I am a photographer. The way I take pictures shows a love, tenderness and compassion for all those with whom I interact. I am drawn to capture moments of shared privacy, reflection, joy, and celebration. Much of my photographic work represents the things that people do to add beauty, express emotions, or represent their values. I have shot weddings, birthday parties, ordinations, conferences, and play dates. Collectively these gatherings represent moments where larger cultural systems such as tradition, theology, and ideology appear and animate the lives we share with other people. For example, Sierra Leoneans pinning money to an expectant mother at a baby shower, a small Baltimore wedding that defied the stereotypical large church wedding because of economics, the convergence of mobile imaging technology in public spaces. My photographs show how small groups of people live their lives, it foregrounds the individual, even as they, often without conscious thought, represent the political. The people in my photos are have their agency left in tact and are powerful in and of themselves.
